Judge Delays Hearing for Google Book Search

A New York District Court judge on Thursday announced the delay of the Google Book Search hearing and instead will hold a status conference on the scheduled October 7th date. Google Book Search is a settlement case that has been pending for more than four years between Google, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers. The deal would allow Google to digitize millions of out-of-print, coprighted books and make them available for sale to readers online. The authors and publishers of the books would share in sales and advertising profits.
The delay from judge Denny Chin comes due to a recommendation from the Department of Justice who felt that the settlement proposal violates copyright, class-action and antitrust regulations. Chin stated that the hearing currently “makes no sense…as it does not appear the current settlement will be the operative one.”

The Authors Guild and publishers will continue to amend the settlement amidst opposition from various parties to meet the concerns of the Department of Justice. Judge Chin also noted that while the deal houses some conerns it also offers many benefits to society.

Microsoft’s Secret Courier Tablet Info Leaked

According to a recent report from Gizmodo on Tuesday, Microsoft is confirming rumors that it actually does have a new dual-screen tablet in the works, codenamed Courier. According to the article and a short demo video, the Courier is a real thing and is more like a “booklet” than a tablet as it folds together and has two interactive touch screens side-by-side with loads of fast functionality.
The project has apparently been kept under pretty tight wraps with very few, both inside and outside of Microsoft, with knowledge about it. In fact, rumors are that the team working on the project, led by J. Allard (a designer involved in the Zune and the Xbox) has been kept away from the main Redmond campus to help keep it secret.

It’s unclear if the Courier is the actual tablet-type product that Microsoft will bring to market as it sounds like they are working on a number of prototypes to find the right one that may give Apple’s rumored tablet a run for its money.

Did an iPod set this Saab on fire?

We’ve all heard the tales of potential danger regarding iPods and fire. It’s often hard to sort the truth from rumor. Well here’s another cautionary tale. This one comes out of Sweden where a Saab 9-3 recently met a fiery end.

The official cause of the blaze hasn’t been figured out, but investigators strongly suspect that an iPod left in the car is the culprit. The car itself showed no signs of technical faults and there’s no evidence that the fire was intentionally set. Also, the fire started on the seats, where the iPod was apparently sitting. It’s unclear if the iPod was just tossed there and caught fire all by itself, or if was charging, or if it was rebelling against too much Barry Manilow when things went wrong.
