New Hyundai Santa Fe R-Series Outperforms the Competition in SUV Race for Fuel Efficiency

The new Hyundai Santa Fe R diesel has outperformed the competition to claim the SUV class of the transcontinental Global Green Challenge.

Australia (PRWEB) December 24, 2009 -- Hot on the heels of its Wheels magazine triumph, where the Santa Fe SX CRDi was recognised as the best medium SUV ownership proposition in Australia, the new Hyundai Santa Fe R diesel has outperformed the competition to claim the SUV class of the transcontinental Global Green Challenge.

Hyundai Australia
Achieving an outstanding fuel consumption of 5.1L/100km during a north-south traverse of the country, the latest Santa Fe beat its impressive official government-specified 'combined cycle' fuel consumption by a staggering 23.9 per cent.
The Global Green Challenge is a gruelling, week-long crossing of the continent from Darwin to Adelaide. The Challenge includes two demanding urban loops and covers a total distance of 3,147 kilometres. For real-world relevance, competing vehicles are required to meet strict average-speed protocols on the highway.
At the finish line in Adelaide's CBD, after seven days of intense competition, the new Santa Fe R diesel had consumed a total of just 160.46 litres of diesel fuel and achieved a low 137.67 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
The winning vehicle was driven by former Australian rally champion Ed Ordynski and motoring commentator John Cadogan. "This is a practical, versatile and rugged vehicle with serious off-road capability and seven seats. Yet with a combination of the latest technology and conservative driving techniques, we achieved the equivalent of 56 miles per gallon – a result that would have been unheard of just a decade ago," said Cadogan.
Ordynski added: "Competition in the category was extremely close. I think what we proved was that smarter driving and making the right choice of vehicle can make a real difference to ordinary Australians – both economically and environmentally,"
The new Hyundai Santa Fe R 2.2-litre diesel produces 145 kilowatts of peak power and up to 436 Newton-metres of torque (421 Newton-metres on manual), has seats seven as standard and features the highest safety standards in independent ANCAP tests – five stars for occupant protection.
Two years ago, the Hyundai i30 CRDi returned an astonishing 3.2L/100km over the same journey as part of the World Solar Challenge event.

Are Hybrids the Future of Sports Cars?

Rumors have been building for a while now about the likelihood of the next-generation Nissan GT-R receiving some type of hybrid drivetrain. As it is, the company’s supercar is already an impressive amalgamation of technology and horsepower. Supposedly, Nissan is interested in giving the next generation of the 485 horsepower, all-wheel-drive beast a drivetrain similar to that of the Infiniti Essence concept. That means a smaller V6 with around 440 horsepower and an electric motor with 160 horses. A combined total output of 600 horsepower is sure to please Nissan fans, but there are other factors to consider when it comes to building a hybrid sports car.

Electric motors have always been tempting for automotive engineers for a number of reasons. For one, they’re incredibly compact, providing a serious punch without needing the same sprawling cubic feet that internal-combustion engines require. That small design means the rest of the vehicle doesn’t need to be engineered around an engine bay – freeing up aesthetic and aerodynamic limitations.

Also, electric motors provide all of their torque very low on the rpm band. How low? Try zero rpm. No matter how fast the motor spins, it will put out the same amount of torque. That means from the very first revolution, all of the available power is going to the ground. The engine doesn’t need to build up revolutions in order to make power. In a motor sports setting, that’s incredibly important and can mean a whole new level of performance.

But there are drawbacks as well, and one of the biggest is weight. When it comes to building a sports car, excess weight is to be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, electric motors aren’t exactly lightweights, and the batteries they require to operate can add hundreds upon hundreds of extra pounds to the vehicle’s chassis. That weight adversely affects everything from the car’s ability to accelerate to how it corners and stops -- all the pertinent measures of a sports car’s performance.

That’s not to say a hybrid sports car couldn’t be effective against internal-combustion competition. The GT-R is a prime example of how technology can overcome excess weight. The car hits the scales at a sumo weight of 3,814 pounds. As manufacturing techniques continue to advance, they will allow for more exotic lightweight materials at lower costs. Carmakers will undoubtedly integrate some form of hybrid drivetrain into their athletic products sooner or later, and if anyone could do it successfully, it would be Nissan.

Google branded Chrome OS gBook on the way?

There may be a Google-branded netbook on the way soon. Google has been talking about working with a bunch of manufacturers in order to be sure its Chrome OS runs well and now on top of that, multiple sources say that Google will hire an unnamed netbook maker to build a device specifically for Chrome OS.

Word is that we might see this gBook as soon as next Christmas. And by that time there will be more tiny and powerful processors to choose from, which will give this net-connected laptop some real power.

If Google can make it cheap enough, it could be a real hit.

I-T Click finger mouse

The mouse has gone anorexic. I mean look at this thing. You can barely get a finger on it. Somebody better plug that guy into the USB port and let it eat. This one is called the I-T Click Click 2 and yes, it’s controlled with a finger and a thumb.

We aren’t sure how comfortable that would be, but we imagine that it’s like a constant pinch without anyone yelping. The I-T Click Click 2 features an 800dpi optic sensor. Those in Japan can purchase this thin mouse for 1980 Yen or $21.

What do you think?

Asus Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

Move over Roomba, there’s a new robo-vac in town. Asus wants a piece of this market as well. The ECleaner robot sports a 6000-hour UV light that also helps disinfect your floor and comes with a slot that can be used for spreading the smelly fragrance of your choice.

It can even be controlled using a remote control and will be battery powered. Look for the ECleaner to be available in China and Taiwan before 2010 for about $150.

Insignia Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Photo Display

Everybody hates alarm clocks. So most of us wouldn’t pay $49.99 for an alarm clock. But what if it had the ability to display pictures, a media card reader and 128MB of internal memory? That might be worth the money.

The Insignia Dual Alarm Clock Radio does just that while still keeping up with its alarm clock duties. It will display digital pictures on its 3.5-inch display. The only thing missing is an audio-in jack to turn it into a speaker. That would have really sold me.

Well at least you can wake up to some nice photos.

Back in January when I went to CES in Vegas one of the coolest things I noticed was the Samsung charging stations in the airport in Dallas. The stations let you charge your gadgets for free while you are on the go. Samsung Mobile has announced that it is putting similar charge stations into 15 different colleges and universities around the country.

The schools getting a charge station this go around include San Diego State University, The University of Colorado - Boulder, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Dallas, Northern Iowa University, The University of New Mexico, The University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, The University of Miami and Louisiana Tech. Samsung plans to add stations to 35 more campuses by the spring semester of 2010.

The stations have eight outlets for charging mobile devices. There is no charge and the stations will charge any device, not just Samsung phones and notebooks.

MyTouch 3G clone runs Windows Mobile 6.5

We’ve seen plenty of knock-off cell phones, whether they be iPhone ripoffs to Nokia clones Blackberry doppelgangers. Let’s face it, they are fun to spot and in many cases easy to laugh at. Take this T-mobile MyTough 3G (HTC Magic) “inspired” phone, for instance.

The design looks like the MyTouch 3G, but this thing is running Windows Mobile 6.5. Some other features include Wifi, GPS, and bluetooth. And as an added insult, it even comes with a pair of headphones that are clearly Apple earbud rip-offs. If for some reason you are interested in rocking this, it’s a steep $288.
