WowWee Unveils Roborover And Joebot Robots

WowWee has finally unveiled its latest pair of robots. The WowWee Roborover and WowWee Joebot are now available to order for $79.99 and $99.99 respectively. We can’t wait to play around with them.
As usual, you can also get the “mini” versions for just $15. Those are basically action figures and won’t do all of the cool stuff the large ones do. Each of the large robots can be controlled remotely or operated autonomously. They’ll play games and Roborover can even handle “rough terrain” and “inclines” so he should be fun.

Bossa Nova Penbo: A Pink Penguin With A Baby

The pink counterpart to Prime-8, Penbo is touted as the “first real robot for girls.” It uses the same locomotion tech derived from the RHex robot, but it also waddles. And has a baby called Bebe. Unlike Prime-8, it’s not strictly remote-controlled. This one responds to touch and voice and the baby. The baby willl summon Penbo and interact and play games with it. Penbo even responds differently to different color babies. There are 4 colors, each with around 21 features.

Bossa Nova Prime-8 Robot

What’s special about Bossa Nova’s Prime-8 robot? Well, it’s a $100 descendant of DARPA and Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute’s $20,000 all-terrain RHex robot. And this one is for kids. Both Prime-8 and Penbo are the launch products for Bossa Nova Robotics, a spinoff of Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute. The goal was to take awesome robotics out of the lab and put it in the hands of real people. Like you and me.

Remote control mower makes me want to mow my yard, almost

rcmower

One of the things that comes along with summer is lawn care. I hate mowing my yard, but I am too cheap to pay someone to do it for me. Mowing the yard is especially sucky here in Texas since it’s like 105 in the shade most days during the summer months. I am counting the days until my son is old enough to do it for me. That’s why I had kids after all.

I think I could probably get the neighborhood kids to mow my lawn for free if I had this sweet remote control mower. The thing looks like a cross between a tank and your average mower and can navigate slopes up to 70 degrees.

The controls are a simple to use joystick and the mower uses a hybrid power system making it need 40% less fuel that comparable mowers. The big downside is that the RC mower pictured here costs about$11,000 and consumer models start at about $2,000.

LEGO: Robo Attack

LEGO’s Robo Attack set is a nice treat for the geek who loves both robots and LEGO. It’s kind of a sci-fi/adventure retro movie theme. You have your giant piloted robot that splits in two, with flame-thrower arms, even panicking civilians and a harpoon-equipped vehicle to take the bot down. $49.99

Transformers Constructicon Toys Released

As shown in the 2009 Toy Fair, The new Transformers toys from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen join together like Power Rangers, dubbed the DEVASTATOR. Out of all the Transformers, this one is the largest, since it is all of the newest toys put together.

It’s either a “new” way to get kids to “catch them all”, or it really is just that awesome. For the sake of the company, we’ll go with the second one. If you buy this, then it’ll lessen your wallet by $119 dollars. Is it worth it? That’s your decision. Coming out some time this July.

2-XL Robot Simulator

Remember the 2-XL robot? It was originally developed by Dr. Michael J. Freeman and was intended to teach kids. Even the name 2-XL translates into “To Excel.” The robot told jokes, played games, and asked questions intended to inspire children to enjoy learning.

Well, 2-XL lives on in the form of a fully functional 2-XL simulator implemented in Flash.

Sega Toys' Dream Cat Venus is sure to be your favorite fake pet ever

Sega Toys has unveiled yet another iteration of the fake cat we've come to know and love, and this time, it's even more "real" than before. Dream Cat Venus -- as this one's been dubbed -- has sensors in its forehead, and touch sensors in its body so that it can react when petted. Apparently more lifelike than previous version Smile, Venus also purrs when certain words are spoken. Sega Toys says this is the right choice for those who just don't have the time for a real pet. We're also pretty sure it's non-allergenic (unlike real felines), cheaper to own (doesn't eat or need to see the vet), and totally won't mind if you head out on vacation for three weeks at a pop without telling him. We'll still feel the guilt though. This kitty's going to be available starting July 30th in Japan for about $110.

Cute Penguin Robot Wants To Be Your Facebook Companion

Pierre Bureau, the founder and CEO of Arimaz in Switzerland, recently showed off a demo of a prototype of a cute penguin robot that his company is planning to begin selling in September for $99. It’s called MyDeskFriend. The idea is that this Penguin is a small companion for your desk.

It comes with a docking station which is hooked up to the PC. You can interact with the robot in a variety of ways. It can follow your finger and will even detect the edges of the your desk so that it doesn’t fall off, thanks to 5 infrared sensors. It also has an accelerometer, so it knows when it’s being touched or shaken. The eyes will change color with it’s mood. If you shake it too much, it’s eyes will turn red. You can even connect it with your Facebook profile.

new japan's robot

The new Japanese humanoid robot HRP-4C displays a range of emotions (good luck discerning what they are) during a press conference in suburban Tokyo this week. Naturally, plenty of paparazzi were on hand.

(Credit: AFP Photo/Yoshikazu Tsuno)

She doesn't have the grace of a Cindy Crawford or Elle MacPherson (yet), but a few struts on the catwalk may help HRP-4C loosen up and hit her stride. The walking, talking girlbot will be getting practice soon, as she's set to make her catwalk debut at a Tokyo fashion show next week.

Scientists from Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology reportedly designed the 5-foot (ish), dark-haired creation to look like an average Japanese woman between the ages of 19 and 29. Unlike the average Japanese woman, however, HRP-4C has 30 motors in her body that allow her to walk and move its arms (somewhat loudly and awkwardly, if the video below is any indication) and 8 facial motors for blinking, smiling, and expressing emotions akin to anger and surprise.

According to the Associated Press, the robotic framework for the HRP-4C, sans face and other coverings, will sell for about $200,000, and the technology behind it will eventually be made public so people can come up their own moves for the bot.

The government-backed AIST says she's mostly being developed for the entertainment industry--for use in amusement parks, for example, or as an exercise teacher--and is not yet ready to help with daily chores. So unfortunately for those eager to hire HRP-4C as a home or office assistant, for now at least, her main job is to look pretty--or odd, depending on your perspective.
