Sony unveils two new 1080p Handycams

Nothing too remarkable about Sony's latest HD camcorders, but the new 64GB HDR-CX520V and 32GB HDR-CX500V are solid updates nonetheless. Identical apart from the built-in storage, both feature an Exmor R CMOS sensor with BIONZ processing that should offer solid low-light performance and decent 12 megapixel stills, Optical SteadyShot with a new active mode and three-way shake cancellation, Face Touch autofocus that allows you to simply point at faces to prioritize focus in order, and, most notably, a 1080p/60 scaler, which'll upscale your footage to 60p when connected to a compatible HDTV. Not a bad piece of kit, but they'll cost ya: the HDR-CX500V will run $1,100 and the HDR-CX520V will be $1,300 when they arrive in September.

Genius goes HD with G-Shot HD520 camcorder

When I was a kid making home movies required a massive camcorder and a giant VCR that you wore like a purse. It was a lot of work for dad to record the flag football game. Today camcorders are tiny things that you can carry without even noticing they are there and many of them even capture HD resolution video.

Genius has announced its first camcorder called the G-Shot HD520. As the camera name implies it records HD video in 720p resolution in MPEG-4/H.264 format. The little camera weighs less than six ounces and can capture 11-megapixels still shots along with video.

Face Detection is integrated into the camera along with electronic image stabilization. A 2.5-inch LCD lets you see what you are filming and rotates 270-degrees. Video is stored to 32MB of internal memory and capacity can be expanded to 8GB with SDHC memory card support. The camera also has 5x digital zoom and sells for $149.

Sanyo announces waterproof HD camcorder

Spring is here and before you know it the hot days of summer will be in full force and staying cool in the pool or at the lake and beach will be top priorities. Any outings with family or friends near water mean someone will have a camera or camcorder handy, but most camcorders can’t take even small splashes without going to the big recycling bin in the sky.

Sanyo has announced a new camcorder that records in 720p HD resolution, and can record at depths of up to 10 feet of water for one hour. The video is recorded at 30 fps and the camcorder has a 30x optical zoom. Still shots can be taken with the 2-megapixel still shot feature and sequential shooting at 13 fps is featured.

The LCD of the camera is a 2.5-inch unit for easy filming. The battery in the camcorder is rechargeable and works for 3 hours and 20 minutes straight. Digital image stabilization works for the still camera and camcorder function. Video is stored to SDHC cards in MPEG-4, H.264 formats.

JVC debuts new Everio hybrid camcorder

The tech wizards over at JVC have on their hands today a new dual-use camera that shoots high definition video and high resolution digital still images. It is part of the company’s Everio line up and will cost around $1,000 when it debuts in June.

The JVC GZ-X900, or Everio X, is a all-in-one digital camera weighing around 0.66 pounds. It is capable of shooting both nine-megapixel digital pictures and also 1920 x 1080 Full HD AVCHD video. These digital media captures are recorded to SDHC memory cards.

Highlights of recording features on the Everio X include 10x slow motion shooting that plays back 2.4 seconds of recorded video over 24 seconds, up to six nine-megapixel stills that can be shot at 15 images per second and simultaneous five-megapixel digital still shooting while recording HD video.

Waterproof Shockproof Freezeproof Olympus Stylus 1030SW

The Gadget: The Stylus 1030SW, Olympus’ semi-indestructible 10.1MP point-and-shoot, is designed for fairly extreme conditions. Olympus claims the camera is shockproof (to 2 meters), waterproof (to 10 meters), freezeproof (to 14°F), and crushproof (to 220 lbs.) We’ve seen other cameras with features like this, but it’s rare that they’re all combined into one.

I tested the 1030SW under fairly rigorous conditions, and for the most part it stood up to the challenge. After dropping the camera to the ground from around six feet, it took pictures without any problem. Next was the underwater test. I didn’t take it to the limit, but I did bring it with me in the tub. The camera works under water, and there are options designed for capturing images of sea life. The pictures didn’t come out too well, but that could be my fault as it is likely designed to shoot fish in clear water and not sitting in a bathtub, taking pictures of my…er…feet.

Things got a little trickier during the freeze and crush tests. I left it in the freezer for about two hours, and when I took it out I had a “Battery Empty” message. Worried that I damaged the camera, I let it thaw and it came back to full power after 10-15 minutes. For the crush test, I placed all 170+ pounds of myself on top of the camera. At first I heard a little unnerving crunch, and when I picked it up, I saw what looked like a crack in the LCD screen. However, after about 15 seconds, it went away and I was left with the same crack-free screen I had when I started.

As for the pictures, they came out well for the most part. In optimal conditions, they looked great. When I was under water, or in a dimly lit room the snapshots left a little something to be desired. I was able to correct some of the shots with the various exposure options, but it’s still a point-and-shoot.

If you are going on an outdoor adventure and looking for a light, easy camera to take, this is a good bet. I wouldn’t recommend pushing it to the advertised limits, but it’s definitely sturdier than other cameras in its price range.
